School News: The latest events in and out of school

Flicker, flicker, went the flames in the fire – but they shone brightly

Last week the foundations classes performed their Nativity play for their parents and grandparents. It was lovely to see them all dressed up in their costumes and hearing them sing their Christmas songs and say their lines.

Performing on the stage in the glare of the stage lights and in front of an audience for the first time, the children excelled themselves.

The children clearly enjoyed themselves whilst telling the story of the Nativity in song, music and dance. The little ones spoke their lines clearly and sang enthusiastically to the applause of their parents and carers. As one of the songs went, “Flicker, flicker, went the flames in the fire”, but the children shone brightly in their first large scale performance at school. A lovely start to the Christmas festivities.

Looking at animals – and feeling them too

“Are those sandwiches for me?”

Meeting Max the chinchilla

On 16th October, Blue and Yellow Group visited Twycross Zoo.  The Zoo is world famous for saving and caring for monkeys and the children saw lots of different types of monkeys including chimps, gibbons, orang-utans and gorillas.  Tommy the chimp made them all laugh by playing peek-a-boo with them, although one of the orang-utans was not so keen to be looked at and hid his face under a pink blanket!

During their visit, Mr Bates, the Zoo Keeper, let them touch a chinchilla, a leopard gecko, a tree frog and a hissing cockroach.

The children saw lots of other animals including lions, elephants, giraffes, camels, prairie dogs and seal lions.  The penguins were very funny and kept swimming up to the glass to look at them.

They all enjoyed their visit to Twycross Zoo and learnt lots of things that will help them in their Topic work – “Looking at Animals”.

Indian dance workshop

As part of their topic this term, the Year 4 children participated in an Indian Dance workshop that was held in the school hall. Guided by local dancers they learnt about traditional Indian dance and then learnt a number of different dance steps and routines.

The dancers brought along some traditional Indian costumes for them to try on and also a variety of traditional musical instruments for them to listen to.

The children enjoyed their dance lesson and learnt many things about traditional Indian dances.

A group of the children later used some of their new steps and routines in their own dance to present the traditional Indian story of Rama and Sita to the rest of the school in a class assembly.

Foundation’s fun – filled playground officially opened

Who’s going to go first?

The “talking daisy”

In the last week, Foundation’s new playground has been officially opened by Mr John Walklett, Chair of the School Governors, and the children’s reaction? A big “thumbs - up”!  The new play area has a multipurpose climbing frame at its centre with different activity areas all around it.

The ground under the frame has been covered with a special safety surface to protect the children if they should fall.

There is also a new covered play area so that the children can play outside even if it is raining. In the summer it acts as a sun shade.

The children have really enjoyed exploring and playing in their new play area every day since it opened.

Repelling the recent Roman attack

For the second time in two years the Year3 children had to pick up their shields and spears, paint on the wode and form up ready to repel the latest group of Roman invaders. Unfortunately the invaders were too strong and the centurians, with their superior weapons and tactics, won again.

The invaders belonged to the Time Zone group who were in school to teach the children all about the Roman invasion and life in Roman times.

As you can see, the children put up a very good show - Boudicca would have been proud of them!

“Bonjour Hardelot” Yr 6 enjoy snails and chocolate in France

In October the year 6 children travelled to Hardelot sur Mare, a small seaside town just outside Boulogne, to stay at the PGL activity centre based in an old farm house.

There, they took part in the many adventurous activities, including speedsailing on the wide sandy beach and tackling the very muddy adventure course in the centre’s grounds.

They also visited the local places of interest, including a local chocolate factory (those free samples – yum!) and the Nausicca marine life centre in Boulogne (those sharks – cool!).

In the evenings the children enjoyed the varied activities organised by the PGL “groupies”, including the fashion show and the variety show – though their teachers still quake at the mention of water, marshmallows and yoghurt!

All the party enjoyed the meals at the centre and making their own baguettes for picnic lunches. The finale to the week being a French meal complete with escargot, cuisses de grenoilles and boeuf borguignon (snails, frog’s legs and beef stew for those of you who can’t speak French!).

A big “merci beucoup” from all the children to the school staff who helped look after them on their exciting visit.
